Those are questions many new and not-so-new bloggers ask me and they’re smart questions because guest posting on top blogs has helped me grow my blog more than anything else.

I’m not really a genius of any kind but writing guest posts and getting them published on top blogs has helped me connect with hundreds of engaged readers who’d never have heard of me otherwise so I recommend guest posting to all bloggers.

As a blogger you want people to visit and read your blog.

If no one does what’s the point in writing a blog? It’s like talking to a wall.

So how can you find new and targeted readers when you’re just starting out blogging?

If you’re a new blogger you’ve probably been studying how to write good blog copy because you’ve heard that content is king.

It’s partially true.

As a blogger you need to understand how to write well.

You need to write with your readers in mind and help them solve their problems, but that’s not all. You also have to learn how to:

  • write killer blog headlines;
  • draw your readers into the blog post;
  • make your blog posts scannable;
  • persuade people to subscribe to your blog.

Guest Posting for Blog Power

Let’s say you’ve spent six months studying and practicing writing guest posts and you’re getting good at it now.

Of course, there’s still room for improvement, there always is when you’re a writer, but let’s assume that your blog posts are B+ material.

You have some subscribers too but they’re growing slowly.

Absurdly slowly in fact.

Maybe you’re aiming for 1000 subscribers after the first 12 months of blogging, like I did, but at your current rate of growth you’ve worked out it’ll take you five years of blogging to get them.

It’s tough and you need things to pick up fast.

In your heart you know what you really need is advertising.

When your blog’s got more subscribers and readers the quality of your writing will mean that word of mouth (or mouse) advertising will kick in, but until then you need a break.

You need something to give you and your blog a kick start.

Imagine a pay-per-click campaign with Google adwords where any time someone searches for your topic they see an ad for and link to your blog.

It’d be great to see your blog advertised on the side of a bus or twenty.

A slot on prime time TV would help too, preferably during that doggy show when all the dog lovers you’re targeting with your dog training tips blog will see it.

But get real.

These types of ad campaigns are expensive and you shouldn’t spend too much money on a blog that probably won’t earn you any money in the short term.

Or ever if you can’t get more people to visit it.

So let’s go back to your blog writing skills.

If I asked you to give away your very best writing to someone else for them to use on their blog would you? It’s not very appealing I know.

You’ve probably spent a while writing your blog post, even longer editing and polishing it to perfection, not to mention that the expertise you’ve drawn on took a lifetime to come by.

Now, I bet if I said I could get you a free advertising deal which put your brand or blog in front of your target audience you’d be more interested.

Well, with blogging giving away your best writing and getting free advertising are the same thing ~ it’s called guest posting.

Don’t focus on just one blog for your guest posts. Run with them as many suitable blogs as you can find to reach as wide an audience as possible.

Try creating a list of potential blogs to host your guest posts, ranking them in order of the most to least desirable then start at the top and work your way down.

There’s another sneaky way to steal competitors’ links, and it doesn’t necessarily require you to have the best content or guide on a particular topic.

You’ll need to find people linking to your competitors’ old and broken URLs to do that.

Your competitor might have broken URLs for several reasons.

Perhaps they took down a blog post.

Perhaps they restructured their site but failed to redirect the blog post correctly, resulting in a 404.

However, you shouldn’t be too concerned about the reason for the broken URL.

Instead, what matters to you is that it is an opportunity ripe for stealing your competitors’ backlinks.

To start, you’ll want to run a broken link analysis on your competitor’s website.

Again, I recommend using SEMrush, as it includes a Broken Pages report listing all of your competitor’s broken URLs.

The next step is to sort the results by the number of backlinks each broken page gets.

The more backlinks it is getting, the more likely you will get results from what you’re about to do next.

Using SEMrush, click on the backlink section in the report next to each broken URL (it will be a number highlighted in blue).

That will bring up the specific URLs linking to the broken page.

You can then reach out to the bloggers linking to the broken page and let them know that a page they link to no longer exists.

They certainly don’t want to send their readers to a nonexistent page and inconvenience them.

That would reflect badly on them.

Therefore, they will likely be happy to replace the broken link with one of your functioning pages.

Be polite when reaching out.

Draft an email that goes something like this:

“Hi [Name],

I noticed that your blog post [Insert Hyperlinked Blog Post Here] links to a broken and nonexistent page [Insert the page it is linking to, in parentheses].

On January 20 of that year, Matt Cutts declared the death of guest blogging for SEO because filthy marketers turned this respectable tactic into the infernal machine for poor link building.

Oh, those sweet memories…

I’ve rushed into guest blogging in 2013 to find myself in the hot seat: spammy content, keyworded anchors, random outreach, irrelevant SEO titles, and thin rewriting represented every second guest post looked back then.

Those unlucky bloggers – I was among them, to be honest – had no issues with plagiarizing ideas and writings from others to generate tons of mediocre articles for backlinks.

To be sure, not everything was rotten in the state of Denmark.

It’s absolutely true that you should build your online business on “land” that you actually own and control.

Broadly speaking, this means that you should be sharing high quality, valuable content with readers on your own website.

You have complete control over how that content is presented, and you are not at the mercy of fickle algorithms that are completely outside of your control.

At the same time, having the absolute best content on “land” that no one ever visits isn’t going to do you any good either.

It’s like the proverbial tree falling in the forest with no one around to hear it.

It doesn’t matter whether or not it makes a sound, because no one will hear it and no one will care.

Surely, you don’t want your online business to suffer the same fate.

To that end it means you need to go where your audience is.

And that’s where guest blogging — yes, even in 2021 and beyond — is still a very viable and robust strategy.

Google didn’t like that.

Building dofollow backlinks with keyword-rich anchor text via guest blogging is still frowned upon by the world’s largest search engine.

A great example of this is exactly what was stated above as a primary objective.

Even if the links to your website are nofollow, as they typically should be in a guest blogging situation, Google still sees that as a signal.

If you’re looking to establish authority, when Google sees your name/brand and website attached to high quality content on high quality websites, that bodes well for the perceived value of your website too.

Similarly, even if the primary objective isn’t necessarily to garner organic traffic through links to your website, they are there and they do help.

More organic traffic, even if they’re through nofollow links, send further data and signals to search engines that what you have to offer is valuable and important.

It increases brand visibility and bolsters your online influence.

Just remember that you have to offer real value with high quality content in your guest posts.

So, how do you get there?

It starts with the art of the pitch.

After you’ve decided on which website to approach, you’ll need to craft together an effective pitch.

As it’s more of an art than a science, you’ll find that not every process or strategy is going to work every time.

That being said, you should keep a few key pointers in mind.

  1. Never copy and paste a “form letter” email to multiple websites with the same pitch. Custom tailor every pitch to each website individually, including finding the name of the editor in charge of content, clearly demonstrating that you have a real interest.
  2. Show that you have some knowledge of the website and who their audience is. Point out how your article will be beneficial or useful to this target demographic.
  3. Pitch the actual idea for your guest post. Keep it short, but make it clear the kind of article you’d like to write. Also indicate that you are open to collaboration or other ideas the site editor may think are more appropriate.

But even in this case, some choose spending resources on epic content for own blogs in hopes for natural backlinks and brand authority rather than creating it for others in hopes for traffic.

This suggests that modern guest bloggers care about lead generation.

They don’t worry about Google algorithms updates because they know: Google is smart enough to tell the difference between writing for SEO and people.

They concentrate on blog posts quality, telling stories to trigger emotions and solve readers’ problems because they understand: value and emotions, not links, are what builds trust and generate leads.

Modern guest bloggers develop a personal brand and build their audience.

They contribute content for more people to know them and, therefore, back to them.

Networking is one of their primary goals because they realize:

Connections are what determines business success.

And what is the best way to connect with authoritative bloggers?
