Barker Street Boarding House
Barker Street boarding house brings an innovative approach to the new boarding house typology. Located on the corner of Barker Street and Hospital Road Randwick in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, the site adjoins the RPA medical precinct and is near the UNSW main campus.
The design takes cues from the surrounding lower scale urban context, which is dominated by two to three storey apartment buildings and single detached family houses. By rethinking the traditional building form usually associated with boarding houses, the highly articulated series of stepped pavilions creates a scale and rhythm that befits the local neighbourhood. Generous landscaping also contributes to the ‘detached house’ feeling while offering privacy and comfort for tenants.
DesignInc worked closely with the client to ensure a high level of amenity for each room, including generous proportions, natural cross ventilation and private balconies for all residents.
The project involves the demolition of an existing single-storey dwelling, and construction of a three-storey 10-room boarding house.
